Some of the packages in contrib fetch or use non-free software from
non-Debian-packaged sources. Therefore, contrib can be useful without
the Debian hosted non-free repository.

$ apt-cache policy flashplugin-nonfree
flashplugin-nonfree:
  Installed: 7.0.63.7
  Candidate: 7.0.63.7
  Version table:
 *** 7.0.63.7 0
        500 http://ftp.debian.org unstable/contrib Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

$ apt-cache show flashplugin-nonfree | grep Depends
Depends: debconf | debconf-2.0, gsfonts-x11, wget
