Re: Dual booting 64-bit and 32-bit kernels

Greetings all, I guess I should chime in on this thread. I have an HP
Pavilion zv6000 (zv6201cl) laptop. It has a 60 GB hard disk which had
only Windows XP Home Edition on in a 20 GB partition.

At the time I purchased it, I decided to dual boot Debian and Windows.
Yes, I have that one Windows application that I just can't part with
(Bagpipe Player). Then, at the regular Friday night AKLUG Laboratory
Session, someone suggested I load Fedora Core 4 (I think) to see how it
worked. The reason was I couldn't get Sarge (64) to install.

So, for a time, I had a) WXPhe on hda1 (32 bit I think - how can I
tell?), b) Debian Sarge (broken) on hda2, and FC4-64 on hda3. I set up a
VFAT32 partition (hda5) so I could share files between WXP and whatever
Linux I happened to be using. I also set up a separate /home partition
(hda6) with the idea that I could mount it on /home in whatever Linux I
happened to be running. (I of course had a swap partition, hda7, too).

The FC4-64 installation did have the proprietary ATI drivers, but I
couldn't get the wireless to work. Also, Red Hat puts things in strange
places, and they have a very different way of going about configuring
things as compared to Debian. So, I decided to try SimplyMEPIS (a 32 bit
distribution based on Debian).

Thus, my present situation includes the ability to boot into either a 64
or 32 bit Debian system using grub on the mbr. I also can boot into WXP.

Cheerio! fgd.
