Lack of index is pretty normal for PDF documents, most data sheets for
electronic parts also lack one.

Looks like you don't have Cups installed.

But this looks like you do.

I guess Acroread wants BSD lpr utilities. "apt-get install cupsys-bsd"
to install BSD lpr compatibility commands for Cups.

I get the impression you have a mix of Cups and BSD lpr installed on
your machine. Get rid of everything else and only use Cups.

It's not clear to me what packages you have installed, so hard to tell
what's wrong. However, your question is not amd64 specific, so you'll
be much better of asking on a more general mailing list like
debian-users.
