actually, having looked at the howto link you psoted (naughty me should
have read it beforehand) you should be able to do this from the
installer shell:
bash# chroot /target
bash# grub --device-map=/dev/null
grub> device (hd0) /dev/sda
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
