If you notice any difference on a desktop system then you are doing
something wrong. Most of the time the cpu will be run at a lower cpu
frequency anyway (if configured) which has a way bigger effect on
speed than 32/64 differences. It realy doesn't matter if you cpu idles
10%, 20% or 1000000% faster.

If you notice slowdowns in 64bit then it will be due to not enough
ram. 64bit does tend to use more and 512MB isn't that much if you
multitask a lot.

For number crunching applications you can notice quite a bit of a
difference. Especialy in those apps with amd64 optimized code (or
those that gcc can optimize good on its own).
