You had the kernel module loaded, but it couldn't find the X driver.  My bet 
is that the nvidia installer placed the files in /usr/X11R6/lib64.  This 
*should* be a link to /usr/X11R6/lib, but you have to create the link by hand 
before installing the driver.  Also, I have not installed the 32bit 
libraries- not sure if they would place nice with the 64bit libraries given 
the lib64->lib link...

Also, there are many options for the nvidia X driver (see README)...  One 
other random note:  on my laptop (Compaq R3000), using the 6629 driver, I 
have to pass the NVreg_Mobile=0 option when loading the nvidia module.  This 
option was not necessary for the 6111 driver.  Just something to keep in mind 
if you are using a laptop.
