Could it be a hardware problem on your box? I spent some time
struggling with RAM problems and the problems tended to follow a
certain pattern, mostly manifesting as difficulty reading files from
the hard drive or CD-ROM (both IDE.) In your case it looks like it
encounters errors trying to load a particularly library.

In my case with the RAM in slots 3,4 on an ABIT AV8 a some X process
would would complain about trouble opening some file when gdm was
loading. Setting the RAM speed to DDR333 (from DDR400) solved the
problem. More recently I find that the system runs reliably with the
RAM at DDR400 when installed in slots 1,2.

FWIW I've been using kernel compiles and setiathome (concurrently) on
both ATA, SATA and NFS mounts to test stability (based on long past
experience with "signal 11" problems.) It seems that the compiler -
and perhaps emacs - stress the system in ways that other programs
don't. You might try setting a lower RAM speed in your BIOS to see if
that makes a difference.

Well, um... <whispering>I'm running Ubuntu and the compiler is
gcc (GCC) 3.3.4 (Debian 1:3.3.4-9ubuntu5)
<whispering> My apologies if this is taboo, but it seems this issue
may not be distro specific.

I haven't actually tried to run any of the kernels I've compiled, but
they all complete without reporting errors.
