try a different file type i guess ive played everything fine on fbdev (divx etc) x11 is when x (your cpu) does all the work xv passes a lot of it to the graphics card scaling in x11 will murder performance scaling in xv will have no effect on performance as according to my understanding, the video card does that. did you compile mplayer or get debs?
