Using a chroot is not the only way of running OpenOffice on the Pure64/AMD64 
port of Debian. Look on this list for a package called "amd64 archive", which 
provides a few 32bit programs (including OpenOffice) together with their 
libraries, so you can run them in your 64bit environment.
