I've experienced similar problems, but not recently.  One workaround
was to switch to another virtual terminal (e.g., ctrl-alt-F2) and then
run
  % sawfish-client -f restart

IMHO the sawfish-client command is one of sawfish's coolest features.
I'd be very interested to know of any other WM that even comes close
for on-the-fly configurability.
