At my university, they run what looks like a working multiarch
implementation on an AFS network filesystem. With the aid of symlinks
using some sort of @sys variable, they are able to use the same path
specifications for both some Sun SPARC servers, and their Debian i386
terminals. They have used this structure for some time now, and I think
it is an elegant way of making multiarch transparent. However some work
is probably required if it were to be implemented as multiarch on a
single machine. Additionally, I have no idea how well something like
this applies to dpkg/apt.
