The kernel is indeed one of the last few packages in the gcc-3.4/4.0 
archive which is not compiled with gcc-4.0. 
I am planning to build the 2.6.11 kernel with gcc-4.0 as soon as the 
debian source package for 2.6.11 becomes available.
