Can you test the sid mkinitrd or is that the same version. That bug
was reported some time ago and should have been fixed by now.

Where is the sid mkinitrd? I installed initrd-tools 0.1.77, and am
still getting this error.

That is the right one. My /usr/share/initrd-tools/scripts/e2fsprogs
contains the following line:

LIBS=`ldd $PROGS | grep -v linux-gate.so | sort -u | \

This looks like a partial line? I definitely don't have a line like that in my /usr/share/initrd-tools/scripts/e2fsprogs though.

which should prevent that error.

Could you please double check that you actualy do have 0.1.77 and that
it contains that line?

I do have 0.1.77:

root@ns2:~# cat /usr/share/initrd-tools/version

but it is from the main Debian sources. Here's my sources.list:

root@ns2:~# less /etc/apt/sources.list
#deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sarge main

deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ testing main
deb-src http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ testing main

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main

deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main
deb-src http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main

#deb http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64 testing main
#deb-src http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64 testing main
#deb http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64 unstable main
#deb-src http://debian-amd64.alioth.debian.org/pure64 unstable main

I had tried alioth, but was unable to install any packages using it. Is this the problem? I'm still using the 32-bit userland and 64-bit kernel.

If so please change the first line from '#!/bin/sh' to '#!/bin/sh -x'
and run

apt-get install --reinstall kernel-image-2.6.8-9-amd64-generic 2>&1 | tee log

I no longer have 2.6.8-9 available, but I do have 2.6.8-10:

root@ns2:/tmp# apt-get install kernel-image-2.6.8-10-amd64-generic 2>&1 | tee log
