I would guess this is the problem: ide_generic is always added to /etc/modules by debian-installer. If you boot from scsi or sata or any non-IDE device, then ide_generic is loaded first to manage all IDE disks and cdroms without supporting DMA. Loading via82cxxx later doesn't help. The only clean solution is to open a bug report against debian-installer to get a fix this, and to remove ide_generic from /etc/modules. Or (if you are more carefull) add a line "via82cxxx" to /etc/modules above of ide_generic. Regards Harri
