Yes, all versions of Debian are Free.  

If you have not used Linux before, I would suggest going to
www.Debian.org and running the i386 version of Debian to get used to
Linux first.  Debian for amd64 is still "beta" software, while the
i386 version of Debian is very stable and is widely regarded as a very
solid system.
