still can't build a kernel / -m32 doesn't work

i'm still stuck with 2.6.2. i'm using a pure amd64 chroot from
people/~jgoerzen/. apparently the gcc there was NOT built with -m32 support.
i also tried manually installing the latest gcc from
http://people.debian.org/~jgoerzen/amd64/dists/unstable/main/binary-amd64/
but that wasn't either. (why doesn't apt see the newer gcc in jgoerzen?)
