For a pure 32 bit system any kernel should do. But given the recent
exploits one from security.debian.org, sid or self build is realy
prefered.

For a 64bit kernel a recent one is required. Aparently there has been
a local user root exploit in the 32bit emulation and SuSe and RH have
released fixes. You should use them for debian too.
