kernel image 2.4.21-pre3-amd64-smp doesn't boot actual opteron

Howdy,

I installed the kernel image from Arnd's web page, but it doesn't boot
on my machine.  The machine is a Arima motherboard with dual Opteron
244, 8GB main memory.  The kernel spits some normal stuff out on the
console, then a line starting "CPU 0" and the machine reboots.  It is
difficult to read the messages because they are only there for a split
second.

Bringing the machine up is a huge pain in the ass because the Debian
3.0r1 installer doesn't have a module for the broadcom ethernet.
