There is this bug report for gcc/g++ on Alpha:

gcc-4.4: Miscompilation at -O2 on alpha

When I checked earlier this year it was still present in gcc-4.4 but was
fixed in gcc-4.5.

I'm not particularly hopeful that it is the issue causing problems in
large C++ package builds.
