Well, the only bit you need from the new aboot package is the boot block - perhaps you could extract that from the lenny .deb, and install it to the disk using swriteboot, without bothering with a backport of the packages?

OK, yes, that has got me a step forward, thanks. It now loads the new kernel image, but I now have the same problem I also had with 2.6.22 from etch-backports; both kernels fail to assemble the root RAID filesystem:

I notice the above line - I thought MD arrays were supposed to self- assemble these days, and didn't need configuration files any more?
