Re: DHCP doesn't work with 3.1 installation on Alpha

Everything is fine with etch on a DS10. With sarge on that DS10 and on another DS10L, the ewa0 interface just turns off as soon as aboot loads. It's active when running the console. I didn't notice this at first because I wasn't looking at the LEDs on the DS10's port. The LEDs remain off as the kernel loads. Again, this is with sarge. With etch it just seems to work. Both the DS10 and DS10L are on v7.2 of the SRM console.

ewa0_mode is set to FastFD on both computers. for switches, i tried a HP Procurve 2424m and a Linksys wireless AP.

puzzled,

Josh

My apologies for the delayed response. I didn't have time to pick this up again until yesterday.

After further investigation, I now see that eth0 comes up nicely about 1 time in 10. Simply doing "/etc/init.d/networking restart" repeatedly seems to get it working eventually. I suspect I'm having an autonegotiation problem that doesn't happen when booting from CD. It seems to only happen on a "live" system.

I'm on a DS10L and changed "ewa0_mode" from Twisted-Pair to FastFD at the SRM console. (i guess this means i was on 10baseT before? yikes.) I still have the same problem. I'm going to try different switches and will also dive into the manpage for "interfaces" to see if autonegotiation comes up there.

I'm certainly willing to try etch too.

I'm trying to install 3.1 on a DS10L from the minimal bootable CD.
DHCP works during the first part of the installation when the system
boots from CD, but then it stops working during the configuration
stage when the system boots from its hard disk. I'm on a class B
network and use a class C subnet mask, if that matters. Any ideas?
Nothing turned up in my preliminary search of this mailing list's
archives.

This isn't a problem that I ever saw with sarge on alpha; I had no trouble getting IPs with DHCP. By any chance do you have access to logs from the DHCP server to show what traffic is being sent to and from the d-i client?

Would you be willing to test the latest etch installer to see if it resolves your problem? If this is a bug in the installer, that's where it would need
to be fixed anyway.

Cheers,
