I'm in similar straits :-(. I had a working setup with a TGA2 card,
and decided I should be able to do better than depth == 8. I've been
unsuccessful in getting a no-name SiS 6326 card to work in any mode
other than text. Unfortunately, too many things had to change before
I could even attempt to use the SiS 6326, because the "sis" driver was
omitted from the earlier xorg packages (6.9.0.dfsg.1-whatever).

At least I verified things *were* working with xorg 7.0.something before
I swapped out video cards, but at this point there are so many things
wrong I can't figure out where to begin other than to try going back to
the TGA2 hardware for a while. As things stand now, I've got mostly
7.0.22 packages installed (xorg, x11-common, xserver-xorg) and the
latest xserver-xorg-video-* packages. 2.6.17 and 2.6.18-rc1 kernels
are generating Oopses whenever I attempt to fire up the X server
(sample Oops output for 2.6.17 kernel below -- it's brief, if not
terribly useful). Gotta say I've seldom had a machine so broken that
was still usable :-). When things settle down a bit, I think I'll try
a Radeon 7500 and see if that gets me closer to where I think I want to
be.

The opening "unaligned trap" messages are supposedly nothing more than
warnings, but they are still an indication of something being not quite
correct, and "hald" is generating them too. System is a PWS 433au (Miata).
