If you're using linux 2.4.27 you can try to see if od -x /dev/psaux
output something when you move the mouse ( in text mode )
This is low level reading from the ps/2 port.
Don't know if this works with /dev/input/mice and 2.6
I am also running sarge on a DS10 and never saw a problem like this so far.
