Thanks for the hint, Steve.  I *THINK* my problem is that I did not have
CONFIG_ALPHA_SRM set.  I built myself a new 2.6.1 kernel with that
option (the 2.6.1 that I had laying about exhibited the same problem as
2.4.22) and it booted up OK.

However, there are now more problems with SCSI (more to come on that
one).

I feel that I've been stupid and missed a few obvious things here; OTOH,
the documentation for switching from AlphaBIOS to SRM all seemed to say
"repartition, re-flash, and you're done."  Not really!

Anyway, I will write up a mini-HOWTO on this subject once I've got a
working system :-)
