I got a successful build with NFS, in 12 hours and 47 minutes. 
NFS was not the culprit; I believe the processor was less than 
5% idle most of the time.  Perhaps the 266 MHz CPU is just slow.

I had tried NBD as well.  It was a tad faster, but the files 
did not fit in a 3 GiB ext2 filesystem, and when I extended 
the logical volume to 4 GiB, Linux 2.2.22 could no longer 
mount it via NBD.
