Matlab with alpha linux

Hi,
Does anyone have a hack to get Matlab 6.2 or 5.3 to install on the
alpha linux machines? I've tried the 5.3 install with the -i option but I
still get the following errors.

The following messages were written to standard error
while running 'xsetup' the X Window System version
    of 'install'.

        Warning: Cannot convert string
"-*-Menu-Medium-R-Normal--*-120-*-*-P-*-ISO8859-1" to type FontStruct
        ioctl: SIOCGIFCONF: Invalid argument
        ioctl: SIOCGIFCONF: Invalid argument
tar: /usr/local/matlab/tar: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

thanks,
