Your experience with the 2.2 MILOs mirrors mine exactly :)

I'm running 2.4.7 with the new SYM53c810 driver, without an issue. I might
try compiling 2.4.18 and seeing if I get the same result as you. The
machine this is on is an XLT 366

Can confirm later tonight, however it's definately a 2.0 MILO booting the
2.4.7 kernel. I think it's 2.0.33 MILO, but it might be 2.0.35.
