Hopefully, you also did some version of make config? Perhaps make
menuconfig?
If so, you're likely ready to gunzip the kernel, and copy it and the new
System.map to /boot. But, you should be careful not to overwrite
anything you're relying on now. You want to test the new booting to the
new files before you trash the old ones.
Which brings up the question, how do you boot now? From hd? From floppy
or cd rom? E.g., in srm what do you have for:
show boot_dev
show boot_file
show boot_osflags
If boot_dev points to your hard drive, your test will be pretty straight
forward. You can just supply the new params at the srm command prompt.
If you're booting from floppy, you may find the new kernel will, or will
not, fit on a floppy. If it does, you just create a new one using the
new kernel. If you're booting from cd rom, there are several particulars
to deal with there, too.
I should add that I don't consider myself an Alpha expert by any means.
However, I did just do the same thing about two weeks ago, so I have
fresh experience vis a vis an AS200.
