Re: Gentoo Linux realeased on Alpha

You could think of Gentoo as a sort of breed of *BSD and linux. It _IS_
a linux distribution, but it uses a ports-like system. Everything (if
you so choose so) is compiled from source. Which means you can have
binaries specifically for your processor, you can set it to always
compile with -O3. In theory you get a faster running distro, but
installing applications takes quite a while. Compiling apps + all their
dependencies is not a short process. Compiling XMMS and all of its
dependencies took about 6hours if i remember correctly. But in all
fairness, it did have to compile a lot of gtk libraries and whatnot.
They also have "bleeding edge" software such as KDE3 and GNOME3, but im
sure you can get debs for your system for taht if you really wanted
them.

I have yet to see someone call Gentoo a very stable system, i wanted to
check that out for myself, but until they can get Mozilla building on
alpha, im staying away from it.

I hope i explained it properly.
