Yup - I mistakenly thought that '.' was a good enough directory.

In the end I purged the package, and tried an explicit directory name, and
it worked fine. So it's an absolute/relative issue.

I had a problem with teh following combo:
-rw-r--r-- 1 phil 5751246 Sep 2 11:00 ccc-6.4.9.005-1.alpha.rpm
-rw-r--r-- 1 phil 6647424 Sep 2 10:54 ccc-6.5.6.002-1.alpha.rpm
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 7828 Sep 2 10:40 ccc_6.2.9.506-4_alpha.deb
because the .deb insists:
<<<
The file should be x named ccc-6.2.9.506-1.alpha.rpm.
>>>
When I "ln -s"d to the new files, the installer croaked with
<<<
phil@megaspaz:deb$ sudo dpkg --install ccc_6.2.9.506-4_alpha.deb
(Reading database ... 26391 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace ccc 6.2.9.506-4 (using ccc_6.2.9.506-4_alpha.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement ccc ...
Setting up ccc (6.2.9.506-4) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ccc.postinst: line 103: cd: usr/doc/ccc-6.2.9.506: No

dpkg: error processing ccc (--install):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
