Didn't work, but "halt" in OSF/1 did the trick. I was then able to
boot using:

Then the system started to load the kernel, but then the screen went
blank (black to be precise). I need a hint here - I don't really want
to use the serial console. Does the default boot (I use the "version
23 of the *unofficial* LordSutch.com ISOLINUX test image/mini-ISO for
Debian 3.0" from http://www.phy.olemiss.edu/debian-cd/) use a
framebuffer??
