I once booted a potato CD on a 4-way 4100 previously running Tru64 without
any problems. You might want to do a firmware upgrade, and later on, you
might want to set the boot_osflags variable in the SRM console, so aboot
boots a specific configuration by default, but that is covered in the
installation notes, I think. Firmware is available at the Compaq web site.

At the >>> prompt, type "show dev" to see the listing of the devices,
pick out the one looking most like a CD ROM (for example DKA400), and
type "boot dka400 -fl i".

Depending on whether you have a serial or VGA console, you will select the
appropriate item from the aboot menu.

On the 1000 you will want to enable the SRM console, which would be disabled
now since it is running NT. There should be an option somewhere in the alphabios
menus, but I can't remember which. Once you are at the >>> prompt, you are in
(almost) the same environment as on the 4100. Again, you might want to do a
firmware upgrade.

If the 1000 boots directly into NT, try pushing the push-buttons before
booting; the one that can click into two different positions is the
right one. This will prevent the machine from booting into an OS. Then
disable alphabios. Before booting the CD, be sure to push the button
again to release the lock, or you won't be able to boot.

On the 4100, type "show boot*" to see a listing of boot-related firmware
variables. Compare them with the same list on the 1000, and set the ones
(on the 1000) that don't match. Make sure that boot_ostype (I think)
is set to UNIX. The command to set these variables is "set boot_ostype
unix" for example.

Also, try "set ocp_text Debian" for fun.

Good luck

Florian
