I am afraid that the source code changes kindly done by the maintainer 
have not fixed this problem entirely on Alpha.  The problems can be seen 
in the Balsa mail reader in the HPaned widget (as originally reported) and 
also in the GAIM application in the VPaned widget.  The nature of the 
problem is different with the changes applied, but the root cause is the 
same: code generation bugs in GCC on Alpha.  Until such time as the gtk+ 
libraries can be built with GCC version 3 on this platform (which fixes 
the problem), the only sure solution is to build with -O0 for Alpha.
