2.4.3 and bsd disklabels

The Debian install disks said that I have to use those wierd BSD disk
labels, so I regetfully did :<

Anyhow, I now have disks like this:

BSD disklabel command (m for help): p

5 partitions:
# start end size fstype [fsize bsize cpg]
  a:        2       205       204       ext2
  b:      206       612       407       swap
  c:        1     59560     59560     unused        0     0
  d:      613     20930     20318       ext2
  e:    20930     59560     38631       ext2

Compilied a 2.4.3 kernel and it gurgled along fine, until

hda: unknown partition table
then right at the end the kernel panics because it cannot find the root
partition.

I had
CONFIG_BSD_DISKLABEL=y

so what doesn't it like?
