Not sure...I use my Alpha in the same capacity and have had good results
(not what you're experiencing at all).

Yeah, this is something that I fixed not too long ago. Which ping package
do you have installed (and from which dist, woody or potato)? I may need
to patch it if it hasn't been updated already. There's nothing wrong with
the packets, it's just ping's brain-damage when it comes to comparing
them.
