It's not a hardware problem - 1000A support has been broken for the 4/xxx
models for quite a while in both 2.2.x and 2.4.x kernels.
The good news is that both 2.2.17-pre13 and 2.4.0-test5-pre3 have working
support for 1000A 4/xx and 5/xxx. You'll have to find a way to get an
updated kernel before trying to install. I have made one available, but
don't know if the configuration is appropriate for a Debian install.
For anon FTP at gatekeeper.dec.com:
/pub/DEC/Linux-Alpha/TESTING/up-2.2.17-pre12-15jul/
you will find a floppy image that could be tried.

All OK except for the DAC960, which prolly has firmware (version < 3.x)
that is not supported by the LINUX DAC960 driver.
