I've never seen this option (to "enable" SRM support in the kernel).  
Perhaps it's doing the PAL initialization, like MILO would if it was
loaded, so that the kernel can be booted straight from MSDOS/FAT/ISO9660
by SRM?

I build noname kernels for my Multia, and simply boot MILO from SRM, and
load them from MILO.  I've also done quite a bit of network booting from 
SRM (via tftp and bootp), and it works fine, although the kernels needed 
the small net bootstrap prepended to them, from aboot.
