Right, with 2.2.x you need a console device with major number 5 and
minor number 0.  The install ramdisk has 4,1 (I think).

Yeah, I forgot to mention that our T1 is completely saturated here. :-(

No problem.

It should work out of the box on potato with "console=ttyS0" on the
command line.  I assume the console device on the new boot floppies is
(5,0).  2.2.x kernels handle this.
