The Alphastation 255 has an integrated 83c810a fast-scsi controller,
so I already have 50 pin connectors, both internal and external. I
will probably have to boot from a hard disk connected to it.

No, it doesn't. However, quoting from drivers/scsi/README.ncr53c8xx:
>This driver has been tested OK with linux/i386, Linux/Alpha and Linux/PPC.

However, the reverse is usually true: if a driver doesn't exist/work
for x86, it quite probably doesn't for other architectures too.
