What ls -l bootlx gives? Can you try strace swriteboot /dev/sda
bootlx?

Isn't 2.2.8 the kernel which can corrupt your filesystem (which
explained why 2.2.9 cames only two days after)?
Altough I am now personally using 2.2, the 2.0.36 is still perfectly
ok to use, and probably still more reliable.
