If it's an external raid system, then no raid patches should be
necessary in the kernel; it should present itself as one (or more)
disks. Only if you want to implement the raid in software in the kernel
would patches be necessary. However, I don't believe any patches _are_
necessary! I've used the stock kernel to drive 3 disks in raid-0 mode
off an adaptec on an alpha, and that worked fine.
