I had the same problem.
You must probe sda1, sda2 and probaly one of then will be mounted. After that
you can search the kernel and boot it.
I install milo in a very simple way. You leave a partition with two megas and
once you are running linux, you get the milo disk(I think it's the boot disk)
and:
dd if="the disk" of=partitio bs=1440
and you will get a dos fat partition with the milo and the kernel.
I boot it with the NT loader.
