I had the same problem with Phil using the elm from slink/stable. It
basically segfaulted and messes up the screen (had to reset). Then I
tried to download the elm from potato/unstable and voila it worked
perfectly!

To conclude:
 
elm-me+ 2.4pl25ME+48-2 (bad =(, segfaults and messes up screen)
elm-me+ 2.4pl25ME+52-1.0.1 (good, works fine)

BTW, I'm running a Sable (AS2100 4/275) on Slink kernel 2.2.2-ac7....
