fat format

now that i've got debian installed on my udb, i want to make it boot up
on its own. i've read the milo and linload documentation, but i can't
figure out how to get my fat type partition formatted in order to copy
the needed files onto it. any suggestions?

also, for some reason, vi's response is _insanely_ slow. i'll type out a
sentance and it will appear 15-30 seconds later. the other editor i
tried (ae) didn't have this problem at all. what's up with this? i'd
like to get vi working normally, as it is my favorite editor.
