	I'm not sure that the vmlinux image in /usr/src/linux is bad, but
I've always used /usr/src/linux/arch/alpha/boot/vmlinux.gz generated by a
"make boot". I thought this was just a compressed version of the one
you're using, but maybe there's more to it than that.
