Could you give the prerelease version a go? I have it available via my
debian page http://master.debian.org/~paul/ .  This should have a
number of problems fixed (according to the maintainer; I just compiled
it for Alpha).

There's also a .deb for xterm :-)   You do start X with "startx" ?
