I have a patch for svgalib somewhere.  I can forward it to you if you want
to tackle it again.  It should provide a starting point for you at least.
I got it to compile, but I couldn't test it due to lack of hardware.

SVGATextMode proved to be a pain to me and since I couldn't test it
anyway, I figured it wasn't as important.  I hope that the svgalib patch
will help in that too somehow.

Actually, check beezer.med.miami.edu in the alpha-diffs area...I might've
put it there.  If not, I'll find it tomorrow and send it to you.
