I had a similar problem, when I was parttime connected to an
nameserver. When I wasn't conected to the namesever I couldn't telnet,
ftp or nfs-mount and when I was, i could only use hosts with known
names.
The deamons or clients seem to do a nslookup of the IP to see if that
host is allowed to connect or not. This lookup freezes or fails and
then the ftp, telnet or nfs-mount is doesn't work.
Make sure you have no nameserver entered (or have it setup correctly)
and ensure that all "/etc/hosts" are correct and complete.
Hopefully that helps.
