Is it the libpath actually? I tried the same with LD_PRELOAD and it
didn't work.

What worked was "ln -s EB64 /etc/alpha.systemtype" (EB64 must not
exist).
The X will search there for the system type or scan /proc/cpuinfo,
which fails with older milos or on ruffians.

PS: Could you try nfs please. With 2.1.128 I can do ls, but not a cat
on any nfs files.
