multia boot (ramdisk?) problem

forgive the basic question but i didnt find an answer to this problem in
any faqs or readmes that i came across...

i've got a multia vx40 166 here with 24 megs of ram in it and on booting
from milo (with command: boot fd0:linux root=/dev/fd0 rw ramdisk_size=5120
load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=1) i consistently get a "Not enough memory"
error immediately after a bit of text apparently describing the filesystem
on the floppy

and then it says press any key to reboot

wtf?
